Why a Simple SWOT Analysis Might Be the Clarity You’re Craving

A few months ago, I asked a client to do a SWOT analysis.
It wasn’t some flashy, high-level strategy session.
It didn’t take hours.
It wasn’t complicated.
But you know what she said afterward?
“That made everything feel clearer.”
We talk a lot about clarity in business—but rarely slow down to create it.
We assume clarity comes from:
Doing more
Fixing what’s broken
Creating something new
But sometimes, it comes from asking the right questions about what’s already here.
That’s what a SWOT analysis does.
So, what is a SWOT analysis?
It’s a simple four-part exercise where you map out:
Strengths – What are we great at? What’s working well right now?
Weaknesses – Where are the gaps, bottlenecks, or habits slowing us down?
Opportunities – What untapped potential could we lean into?
Threats – What outside factors could impact us if we’re not paying attention?
And no—it’s not just for big corporations or MBA presentations.
It’s one of the most accessible tools I use with clients who feel stuck, spread thin, or unsure where to focus next.
What this particular client discovered:
We weren’t even doing a full business overhaul.
She just felt a little “off”—like she was doing a lot, but wasn’t sure what was actually working.
Here’s what came up in her SWOT:
→ She realized her client results were a core strength—but she wasn’t talking about them publicly.
→ She named that her weakest link was a clunky onboarding process that always slowed her down.
→ She spotted an opportunity in a service she’d quietly soft-launched but never promoted.
→ She acknowledged a few industry shifts that she needed to plan for—not panic over, just prepare.
No shiny framework. Just honest answers.
“I don’t really believe in competition…”
…is something I often say. And I mean it.
I’m not here to tell you to obsess over what everyone else is doing or position yourself as “better than.”
But I do believe in clarity.
And part of clarity is understanding your position—what you’re known for, what your edge is, and where you fit in the broader market.
Not from a place of fear.
From a place of strategy.
That’s what this tool unlocks.
Why I recommend doing it with your team
Here’s the magic: your people often see things you can’t.
Your ops manager might name a process that breaks every month.
Your assistant might flag how many questions come from clients around the same issue.
Your contractor might notice competitors talking about things your offer already covers.
Let them weigh in. Their proximity to the work gives them insight that’s easy to miss from your seat as the founder or CEO.
TLDR?
A SWOT analysis isn’t fancy—but it’s incredibly effective.
If your business feels murky…
If you’re not sure what to prioritize next…
If your team is operating, but not necessarily aligned…
Sit down and do a SWOT analysis.
